It’s happened to all of us before. You sit down at your laptop ready to cook-up, and nothing comes out. You get frustrated and wonder why you can’t create. That’s beat-block, and these are 5 ways you can beat it.
1. Take a Break
Honestly, the best thing to do when you’re experiencing a creative block is to take a break. Come back to the idea when you have a clear mind and you’re not frustrated because of the expectations you’ve placed on your creations. If you sit down trying to make a hit odds are you might come up short. But if you sit down to create art; art that you like, and art that makes you feel good then the odds are that the ever-elusive creative juices you were searching for will flow back to you.
Until then, take a break, guys… You’ll come back with a new perspective.
2. Switch Workflows
How do you normally start writing a song? Because, if your normal workflow isn’t inspiring you, it might be time to switch up your workflow. And to that point, you could:
- Start with a different section of the song: instead of focusing on the hook first, work on the verses or the bridge.
- Use a different Digital Audio Work (if you have access to one): Pro Tools looks super boring after a while, right? Maybe it’s time to use another tool to get the process going.
3. Start with a Sample/Reference Track
Sometimes the best way to cultivate a new sound is to study what the greats before you have done. If you’re having a hard time creating a melody or programming a drum pattern try starting with a sample. You can pull some from YouTube Channels, sample packs, etc. and go crazy with them. After you’ve made something you like, take the sample out and now you have your own original beat!
4. Collaborate with another producer/songwriter
One of the best ways to get over beat-block is to work with another producer whose work you admire. As a beatmaker, it’s important to get out of your comfort zone, whether that’s your house or the studio and extend yourself to others to get inspired. Who knows, you may end up making that chart-topping hit with your new producer friend.
5. Get Out of Your Own Head
YOU’RE THINKING TOO HARD. Your work is good. You don’t need validation from outside sources. Have fun. Trust your ears and keep creating.
