Ableton 10 dropped on February 6th. It’s lit.

  1. Groups within Groups:

Grouping tracks is a must when you have big project. You’ve got vocals, instruments, automation, sends, returns etc. and it can get pretty overwhelming if you aren’t organized. Luckily, with Ableton 10, they’ve introduced function that allows you put to make groups within groups! That’s dope.

How to use it: Group your vocals together, and make another group within your ‘vocal group’ specifically for your lead vocals. Keeps you organized with minimal effort!

2. Capture Mode:

Have you ever had an idea that you riffed on the fly BUT you forgot to press record and now it’s lost forever? Well, Ableton knows your pain and they’ve come up with a sound solution to help remedy that problem with Capture Mode.

How to use it: Activate capture mode while you’re in clip view of the software and start working on an idea. if you like what you made but didn’t press record don’t trip about it — the idea was already saved if you pressed capture. MIND. BLOWING.

3. New Instruments

It wouldn’t be a new version of Live without new instruments, right? Well, a few of the new instruments include Wave Table, which by the name you can guess is a powerful wave table synth

How to use it: Go to the instruments section to the left of your screen and load up one of the new instruments. Email us at drummachineaddicts@gmail.com if you have any questions!

4. MP3 Exports

This feature is one we at the Drum Machine Addicts have waited for, for what seems like centuries! Ableton finally added the ability for us to export tracks in MP3 format. While WAV files are the preferred format for audio fidelity, it’s definitely a time saver to have the mp3 format now.

How to use it: Go to file > Export audio/video > change file format from WAV to MP3.

5. Fades

If you’re like me, you use Live for all of your recording & mixing needs. And while Live is a one stop shop for production, recording, and mixing it does stand to make some improvements and this was a much needed one. Now when recording audio or midi you can add fades to the beginning and end of the clip seamlessly to create a better audio experience.

How to use it: Click on the top corner of the clip you want to add a fade to and drag the marker until the audio fade is to your liking.

6. Push Integrations

If you’re a Push 2 user who hoped to look less at your computer screen and more at your controller Ableton has heard your cries and added new screen integrations for the push. Now you can do tweaks to audio/midi effects without have to be directly in front of your computer screeen.

How to use it: Load up an effect, say an paragraphic eq, and notice the differences with your own eyes!

7. Browser Collections

Many live users stressed that they wanted to keep their favorite instruments in a convenient location for access at a moment’s notice. Browser collections are here just for that. They appear right at the top of the browser and Live 10 allows you to color code the collections based on what they are (samples, instruments, etc.)

How to use it: Use the browser to navigate to the instrument that you want to load up and right click to make a collection. Add a color, a name to the collection, and BOOM! you’re good to go…

8. Note Chasing

In Ableton’s words: Notes now trigger even if playback starts in the middle, so you don’t need to start the clip from the beginning to hear a long pad, for example.

How to use it: Load up a VST and click a pad preset. Head over to clip view to record the pad and try out the new note-chasing abilities of Live 10!

9. I/O Renaming

Remember how we mentioned organization earlier? The new function for renaming Inputs & Outputs furthers that discussion. While in past versions of live we couldn’t rename our inputs or outpus we now have that function which should allow for easier transitions between different audio setups (built in audio, your interface etc.)

How to use it: Go down to the channel inputs on a particular channel and use command+r (if you’re on a mac) to use the rename function, then rename the in/out to whatever you need it to be!

10. New Sounds

In addition to new instruments, Live has laced us with a shit ton of new sounds too. Some of our favorites model classic synthesizers from Roland & Moog just to name a few.

How to use them: If you’re new to live and don’t know how to load sounds or instruments you should check out our Ableton Live Tutorials: www.youtube.com/drummachineaddicts
